You will have no problems changing either dollar or sterling traveller's cheques. You can use your card at some banks and exchanges in India, including Panjim and Calangute and in cash machines (ATMs).
Driving licence: preferably international driving licence- If you plan to drive or ride a scooter.
Children (Home Alone)
Insect repellent: or tea tree oil mixed with lavender oil to soothe them.
Universal adaptor: though you can get them here for 50 Rps in most shops.

Little connexions: for all your mobile phones, accessories and money exchanges base at 18th June Road Panjim Goa.
Never give your passport/credit or debit card, to anyone for long periods unless it is in the hands of the proper authorities, and you need to. If you do not need to give your villa/ apartment details to people when buying or hiring things do not do so. We ourselves do need you to fill out a form C for each person staying in any of our accommodation and hand these forms in duplicate to the authorities within 24 hours of your arrival, so please bring with you 2 photocopies of your passport, if you can or we will have to anyway.
Be careful especially in the beach areas as wherever you have crowds of people lazing, their attention will lapse and as with anywhere else, you will have thieves about.
If you have a child or adult in the family suffering from eczema, then you do need to be here for this alone. Our 3 year old suffered from eczema from when he was only a few weeks old. We tried the GP's recommendation of steroid cream, ignoring it, homeopathic, holistic and Chinese remedies. It went through cycles of being bearable to being pussy and bleedy till we visited the ayurvedic clinic here. They examined him and within minutes prescribed him with three months of oral medicines and a scar removal cream and assured us that it would all be over by the time the course of medicine was completed, though it was imperative to complete all of it. The eczema cleared up initially after about 10 days and kept improving for another 2-3 weeks when we were tempted to stop the course of medicine. Thankfully we continued and now, almost a year and a half on, no one could ever guess that he had ever had eczema at all and he can eat anything without us worrying about a reaction.
Always make children wash their hands or use wet wipes before eating as this eliminates one sure way of them get tummy aches. You may get it anyway, but not to worry too much as it comes and it goes very quickly.
Be careful where/when you eat uncooked vegetables.
Always check your products and change in the shop/street in front of the vender, so there is no dispute later as it is very unlikely to be entertained and avoids unnecessary upset.
Remember that almost all things have a foreigner's price attached to it. This applies to anyone that is not Goan. So don't just hand over your cash. Part of the expectation and fun is in haggling. Women are generally better hagglers, without a doubt.
Most villas/apartments have the end that goes in the computer as wall points, so your laptop should be okay. Just bring what you would use in the UK and you will be fine. Remember that we have power cuts here, though most apartments/villas have backup generators, some laptops may need some protection from the power surge. I have not got anything myself and so far, all has been well.
